This is the culminating studio of the MIDEA program (Master of Interaction Design and Electronic Arts). In this studio, students work in close collaboration with an external client, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). The Grad Studio aims to help students strengthen and document their design capacities and help them become job-ready in the design industry. The learning outcomes of this studio include advanced documentation and reporting of research-led design work, delivering evidence-based design presentations, and critically reflecting upon self and peer practices as a design professional.
In the context of growing concern over unhealthy digital habits, the ABC is exploring strategies to encourage users to engage with its content in healthier ways. The studio sets out several fundamental goals, with the overall project guided by the ABC’s stated commitment to delivering content that informs, educates and entertains Australians, reflecting and contributing to the nation's society, culture and identity. First, there is the question of daily consumption of content as a means to promote regular engagement – to keep users informed and up-to-date. Second, accessibility involves ensuring that users have easy access to the diverse range of ABC content across various platforms and formats. Third, considering users' daily routines and rhythms – their circadian consumption habits – in order to promote balanced and mindful consumption of ABC content. Finally, there is utilisation of innovative new media formats and interaction patterns, to deliver content in engaging and health-promoting ways.
The unit remains guided by a concern to promote healthy consumption, a question of encouraging users to consume ABC content in moderation and avoid unhealthy digital habits. Moreover, content must be remain relevant and valuable in users' lives, promoting sustained engagement. These considerations also extend to wellbeing, balancing engagement through compelling content with rest and relaxation.
