This big yet delicate roof is nothing but a huge shadow over the water. Holding together elements of the project, it demarcates the beginning of a considered sequence of thresholds.

Sawmillers Theatre

This theatre in McMahons Point extends the public domain of Sawmillers Reserve into the water, occupying the harbour as a place for performance and gathering. Intervening at the convergence of water and land, the project is envisaged as a building where its structure, programmatic volumes and roof are expressed independently. Like stilts, heavy timber members emerge from concrete piers protruding from the water to form an uncompromising grid of structure, imposing yet delicate. A sweeping tensile roof supported by thin steel cables protects and holds together programmatic volumes and a generous verandah beneath.

Each volume is clad in polished yet roughly brushed steel. Articulated at various angles, they negotiate differing levels of public space as well as places to gather.

The auditorium volume defies the roof, rising through, privileging itself amongst the others. Its lofty rectangular appearance atop the framework structure is in contrast to the roof’s sweeping curved canopy.

Structure defines the long rectangular plan, enclosing a series of volumes. Designed with a degree of engineering redundancy, it allows each a degree of freedom from the rigorous grid below.

The volumes, placed alongside an ample verandah, enclose programs including amenities, gift shop, cafe/bar, auditorium and back of house.

As a continuation of the roof, awnings also extend below on both sides, with part of the northern face cut away to allow for the entry of natural light.
