The Nest is a centre designed to meet the intrinsic needs of all human beings: belonging, connection to nature and self-determination. Inspired by the natural landscape of the Dharug Nation, the design features soft elements including curved walls, high ceilings, and large north-facing windows, creating a safe, inclusive space for community growth. The landscape is rewilded through a Country-centred design focused on biodiversity and an edible landscape, promoting organic movement, food security, and a deep connection to the land. In this multicultural setting, The Nest serves as a healing place for both First Nations people and immigrants.
The ground floor plan centres around The Nest, an angled structure marking the entrance and subtly guiding visitors toward the community centre and the communal dining pavilion while preserving residents’ privacy.
This section illustrates the synergy between co-living spaces, communal dining areas, and a centrally located community garden, encouraging residents to engage with the food they consume, ensuring food security.
The Nest's understated design offers a calm, unobtrusive presence that reflects the natural landscape, with reclaimed brickwork and spotted gum timber nurturing a balanced connection between people and the land.
The first floor of the community centre promotes wellbeing and education with spaces for learning, movement, and mindfulness. Whilst, the co-living includes four affordable apartments, encouraging residents to use shared spaces.
This perspective highlights the community garden’s central location between the co-living and communal kitchens, where residents of all backgrounds can learn, collaborate, and connect through their care for the land.
