Cultural “others” were historically excluded from full participation of civic activities. They gathered and occupied parts of the city, created “safe havens”, where they planted traces of their cultural roots. In a multicultural society, where do cultural roots of “others” fit in a nation’s identity? The notion of fixed identities rooted in a singular origin is still excluding “others” today. This project explores a new way of thinking where identities are constantly negotiated through exchange of roots. By finding, abstracting and combining roots in “safe havens”, the pavilion imagine a future where cultural "others" join the construct of National identity.
