Positioned at the centre of the Taman Fatahillah Square, confronting the old town hall, the project seeks to draw attention to the profound causes and consequences of deforestation. Visitors trace through the past and present of deforestation in Sumatra on an evocative journey, and the experience culminates at a confronting theatre space. Using projections, this temporary architectural installation speaks of the narratives of the affected individuals deeply impacted by the devastation of deforestation. ‘De-sumatratation’ presents the contrast between the figurative representation of power, and the overlooked communities that stretch back to the colonial periods through a blend of installations, vernacular re-representation, and an immersive experience of sight, sound, and scent.
