“It was as if these depths, constantly bridged over a structure that was firm enough in spite of its lightness and of its occasional oscillation in the somewhat vertiginous air, invited on occasion, in the interest of their nerves, a dropping of the plummet and a measurement of the abyss.”

– Italio Calvino, “Lightness,” in Six Memos for the Next Millennium (Cambridge Massachusetts: Harvard University Press, 1988)

New Age Silo at Gore Cove

New Age Silo at Gore Cove is a subversion of the traditional definition of “silo,” to instead create a dynamic enfilade of workshop spaces that open up in public continuum. Performers work together to craft performance art scenes to be presented inside the void whilst audiences circulate and become part of the procession. Its transformative nature allows for a range of spatial experiences, as well as an act of storytelling and a gesture for a collaborative creative process. In response to the industrial site, the design proposal offers up a lightweight steel and polycarbonate structure that adaptively reuses the existing form to repurpose it for a new type of theatre.
