The definition for Engrain (ingrain) is to, “Firmly fix or establish (a habit, belief, or attitude) in a person”. The proposal for this project is to design a mental health institute on the TAFE Annandale site. The big movements for this project are adopting adaptive re-use strategies to minimise carbon emissions and connect the project with the sites history, and providing a wood workshop to enable occupants to design some of the spaces. These are all informed by the concepts of ‘Form follows Availability’, ‘Emergent Co-Design’ and ‘Sensory Modulation’.
The axonometrics analyse the existing resources on site, illustrates the final form and material palette, consisting of new and existing materials.
As part of the 'Emergent Co-Design' concept, the wood workshop enables occupants to design the look of some of the spaces inside the institute.
The indoor waiting area is a large, open space, naturally lit and provides opportunities for patients to design the cladding of the walls.
A bridge is designed between the 2 warehouses to improve access and mobility. The orange walls show where timber cladding produced in the workshop can be installed.
Between both warehouses, a secluded garden is created by the protrusion of two blocks. Informed by the concept 'Sensory Modulation', this space serves as a quiet retreat.
