Me-Mel Art + Performance Space

This project investigates how the latent colonial and industrial infrastructures of Sydney Harbour could be converted into contemporary spaces of gathering and expression, while acknowledging their violent histories. The project proposes the conversion of an 1836 sandstone gunpowder store and a 1943 shed on Me-Mel (Goat Island) into a theatre and performance space through a series of light interventions. The shed becomes an open-air foyer with a series of light pavilions, while floor of the vast barrel-vaulted gunpowder magazine is excavated to create an in-the-round performance space. A new structure houses back-of-house functions and unites the two existing buildings.
