The 3rd Space reimagines diplomacy through a post-colonial lens, engaging architecture as a means of cultural hybridity. Inspired by Homi Bhabha’s “Third Space” theory, the design creates a dialogue between the Dutch and Indonesian cultures, embodying acknowledgement of historical injustices and gestures of reconciliation and collaboration. The embassy reinterprets the alun-alun, Indonesia's traditional communal space, to symbolise respect and mutual understanding, while the Dutch-inspired transparency reflects on openness, public engagement and mutual trust. This embassy marks a transition from colonial imposition to constructive, equitable partnership, presenting a medium for the evolving Indo-Dutch relations.
