Inspired by the timeless form of sandstone amphitheaters, the project’s main focus is the ascending and descending stairs which evoke a sense of procession where each step depends the audience’s immersion into the performance space. The performance piece in The Atlas, is the sea itself, with pipes installed underneath the sandstone blocks. As the waves and tides move, they push air through these pipes, producing harmonic sounds and bag resemble an organ playing a constantly shifting melody. The sound changes based on the strength and rhythm of the waves, creating a unique and ever-evolving acoustic experience.
The exterior render showcasing a birdseye view of the design offers a comprehensive perspective of how the design integrates with its surroundings. From this vantage point, the harmonious flow of the structure’s form is visible, with the natural contours of the land and water influencing its shape.
The entry with ascending stairs is vital as it sets the tone for the audience’s journey, creating an approach to the performance space. It signifies a transition from the outside world to a sacred, immersive environment. The gradual ascent builds anticipation and prepares the viewer for the experience ahead, enhancing the theatre’s sense of significance.
The master plan integrates both the floor plan and the site, showcasing the executed design concepts and principles of utilising the natural contour lines. The form mimics the organic flow of the surrounding landscape, creating a seamless connection between architecture and nature.
The design explored an open amphitheatre paired with a stage designed for amplification of the music from the waves. The stairs faces the ocean and beckons the waves to crash into the form, accepting the waves into the pipes, producing the sounds amplified towards the stage.
This concept collage combines the main points of the project - the natural contour design, the water and rising tides, the sandstone amphitheatre and the concept of the organ. The sandstone amphitheatre wraps around the musical water piano explaining how the water creates music and sound playing to the idea of an orchestra.
