The Wayang Temporary Theater in Jakarta’s historic Fatahillah Square merges traditional Wayang puppet culture with modern architecture, emphasizing the interplay of shadows to evoke the essence of Wayang storytelling. Featuring a dynamic scaffolding structure, immersive shadow performances, and spaces inspired by joglo and limasan roof forms, it offers exhibition areas, VR/AR experiences, and educational zones. By using sustainable materials and innovative shadow-based design, the theater bridges tradition and contemporary culture, preserving and reimagining Wayang’s art for diverse audiences and future generations.
Visitors can explore the history and culture of Wayang performances through multifunctional spaces, rather than merely watching the shows.
The circulation design allows visitors to access performance information before shows and learn Wayang's history and backstage operations afterward.
This design uses standardized ringlock scaffolding, mesh fabric, and plywood, following sustainable principles for easy installation, dismantling, and reuse in temporary structures.
The flexibility of scaffolding enables the creation of diverse, adaptable spaces in the square to meet visitors' needs.
Various functional spaces enhance the dissemination and appreciation of Wayang culture.
