This project challenges the way we approach and engage with a site by embracing the ecological and cultural narratives embedded within the Sydney estuary. Taking lessons from Land Art on site specific practices and ecological decay and growth, this project ponders the site in deep time and how we as humans are intertwined in its unfolding narratives. The total ecosystem of place, inclusive of biodiversity, humans, and man-made materials are considered as a ‘total work of art.’ It brings into play the role of public art to encourage empathy and awareness for environmental landscapes and social issues.

“It seems inevitable that we should leave behind the nostalgic notions of a site being essentially bound to the physical and empirical realities of place.” – Miwon Kwon
