This project reignites Surry Hills’ heritage as the centre of Sydney’s rag trade, reimagining its manufacturing legacy through the framework of contemporary urban production. Drawing inspiration from Lorenzetti’s Allegory of Good Government, the design reflects principles of collective stewardship, thriving trade, public vitality, and a harmonious balance between freedom and order. Located on the historic site of the R.C. Henderson Hat Factory, tragically destroyed by fire in 2023, the building integrates small and medium-scale leasable manufacturing spaces, a co-making hub, multi-use hall and the headquarters of the Specialized Textiles Association (STA). Together, these elements form a collaborative hub for production and advocacy. By re-localising manufacturing, the project reduces reliance on distant supply chains, revitalises industrial culture, and champions sustainable urban development. Its spatial organisation, inspired by woven patterns, interlocks production and communal spaces to foster transparency and interaction. This vision celebrates local identity while provoking new possibilities for resilient, future-focused urban manufacturing.
