The Shed is a reference to the classic Aussie backyard, perched on the rooftop of the building, a lightweight, transparent structure, a welcome contrast to the thick structural concrete of the existing façade. The Shed operates as an event space with garden allotments outside. It can be used as an event space, tool shed, a library of things, and a quiet escape from the city.

Visualising an Australian Dream

This thesis follows a young architect navigating the crisis of the housing market in Sydney in 2036, through the theoretical framework of the changing role of the architect. The architect designs and constructs a multi-storey housing cooperative on the edge of the new civic square in Town Hall. The design process includes participatory workshops with the residents, using architectural visualisation as a co-design tool. The thesis discusses the role of the Australian Dream amid the housing crisis and looks to present alternate models of living in the city, while acknowledging the social, political, and financial limitations of the project.
