Auburn Shopping Village is a prime example of the decaying shopping mall typology on palliative care. MALL.E.ABLE AUBURN seeks to introduce a more malleable environment within Auburn’s context. The vision is to recreate the nostalgic experience of being around others, shopping and socialising in the mall integrated into the urban surroundings. MALL.E.ABLE AUBURN envisions a civic hub that caters to the economics, locals and context of the site. MALL.E.ABLE AUBURN introduces a series of activating laneways and informed adaptive tenancies to populate a fine-grained environment in the heart of Auburn’s local centre fostering an activated and lively domain.
A series of public laneways bisect the site following the existing axis within Auburn. These laneways activate and provide amenity as a central hotspot for existing and proposed commercial tenancies.
Informed by existing tenancy sizes along Auburn, a constellation of micro and macro divisions are provided to serve the local demographic and economy.
The roof works as a second skin, a pavilion-like form not restricted by a singular program. This offers future adaptations in program without imposing a strict confinement in its form.
Whether high or low ceilings, wide or narrow walkways, to the seated areas or tightly packed thoroughfare, it is the experiences and human interactions that are fostered from the laneways.
It is inevitable that Auburn changes and shifts its characteristics. The laneways remain as a constant, capturing the evolving programs, activities and the movement of users.
