Mort Bay Community Theatre in Birchgrove is a public space for leisure, enjoyment, and learning. It acts as an extension of the neighbourhood and an important community space, referencing Mort Bay’s history as a dry dock and site of maritime employment. The proposal transforms the existing concrete platform into an informal and inclusive entrance space, viewing platform, and circulation passage, inspired by the choreography of the harbour promenade. The open floating stage and its proximity to the water supports flexible programming and gives agency back to the local community, by opening up an honest connection to the harbour, previously unavailable.
