The theatre on Ballast Point is a succinct building that is positioned on a rocky outcrop and facing a sandstone cliff face. Its timber structure sits against the eclectic architectural landscape of Balmain. The theatre temporarily occupies the land to invigorate the community character and bring cultural life into the neighbourhood. A double facade of transparent and opaque panels moderates the relationship between the internal spaces and the surrounding landscape of sandstone and water. The theatre’s sloping roof allows for a more human-scale entrance while welcoming the monumentality of the cliff face and sunlight along the northern facade.
