Staging the Museum

Staging the Museum is a temporary building located in Fatahillah Square, Jakarta, that aims to bridge the gap between the square and the surrounding museums. Through modular and flexible spaces, it integrates exhibitions, performances and workshops, bringing the museum collection outdoors and encouraging interaction. The project aims to promote a dialogue between history and modernity, highlighting the contrast between colonial heritage and contemporary culture. By inviting public participation and promoting learning about Indonesian culture, it reimagines the museum as an inclusive, open and engaging space, and recreates the square as a vibrant social and cultural center.

The temporary building’s courtyards, featuring food stalls, gathering spaces, and a theater, transform it into a social hub, showcasing Jakarta’s cultural integration and historical evolution.

Workshops in puppet-making and pottery invite audiences to explore and engage with Indonesian culture through hands-on experiences across the temporary building.

The theatre is flexible and adaptable to performances, with adjustable lighting and an opening roof, creating an immersive atmosphere for puppet shows, street cinema, dance performances and unique cultural experiences.

The modular design provides an adaptable space for exhibitions, seminars or large-scale events, and adjustable panels and benches enhance flexibility to meet different needs and formats.
