Beyond metabolic imperative, humanity has responded to the allure of the water for millenia, forging an intricate and multifaceted relationship, integral to culture, community and connection. This is evident in the case of Sydney Harbour, from millenia of indigenous coexistence, to centuries of colonial abuse, the harbour is undoubtedly and increasingly detrimentally shaped by the humans who inhabit its shorelines. Resulting degradation of the harbour’s water quality is pervasive and persistent, entrenching a disconnection between Sydney’s humans and H2O. Can we remediate abuses of this estuarine ecosystem in order to reconnect and reconcile our innate relationship to the water?
