An oyster speaks softly in Country yet connects Culture, Community, History, and Economy in ways that resonate deeply. Country is all encompassing, uniting every detail of our being. Layers of memory in Country can be explored through a humble mollusc’s deep and intricate connection to many aspects of life. Craft is a series of small structures and details that aid in strengthening relationships to Country through providing agency to Community over design and construction. The features portion is a small gallery/ shop and works to include oysters in various ways. The project was co-envisioned with indigenous oyster farmer, Uncle Ross.
The site 'Jigamy Farm' lies along Broadwater Lake, abundant in culture and history. At present, it is home to Two Fold Aboriginal Corporation, a place of action and community.
The architecture was designed to be built by Community, for Community with materials from Country. The structure is a timber construction frame with screen panel inserts.
Through it's lifecycle, the building will encourage a joyous bond between Communtiy and Country, helping to heal damaged relationships.
An adaptable plan allows for the building to breathe and hold protection where needed. Screen panels can be infiled internally to create thermal and acoustic protection from climate.
Recycled oyster screens are to be built using shells from the onsite farm. The screens provide an opportunity for all members of Community to be involved in the construction process.
