Set into the heart of the North Bondi cliffs, HORIZON THEATRE is not only a place, but an experience which connects the land, the sea and the sky. Designed as the main performance venue for the Bangarra Dance Thea- tre company, a group of contemporary aboriginal dance artists, the project embraces the natural and historical elements of the iconic east Sydney coastline. Horizon Theatre is composed of 3 parts: the land, sea and sky, which are represented by the theatre and programs embedded into the cliff, the ocean bridge, and the stair connecting the base of the cliff to the entrance above, harmonising concept and unique site.
The theatre is nestled into the soft, concave region of North Bondi Cliffs, adjacent to existing aboriginal rock carvings. Their dramatic vertical appearance provides a unique expressiveness in the project.
Horizon Theatre is composed of 3 parts: land, sea and sky, represented by the theatre and programs embedded into the cliff, the ocean bridge, and the stair, connecting all programs.
Horizon Theatre is not only a place to tell and watch stories, it’s the place where the sea meets the land and the sky, an intersection of concept and site.
The cliffs are composed of fine to medium-grained sandstone, which is well-cemented and forms steep, rugged cliffs ranging from 30-40m in height. The theatre is embedded within this dramatic ocean-cliff environment.
This sacred place between land, sea and sky is connected in the realm where architecture and site intersect. A floating ocean theatre, embedded into the ancient cliff, facing the horizon.
