Innovative approach to build a home stay that is more engaging to avoid social isolation faced by international students in Australia. This design approach is based on Re-thinking served space concept in creating heterotopia space using Louis Kahn’s served and serving space”
Served space heterotopia has initiated an interesting street space. There are 48 home stay housing and one cultural centre that includes community kitchen & dining, movie screening, workshop and multipurpose hall.
Serving spaces are oriented to the middle of served spaces to form new heterotopic served spaces.This served space of the cultural center has a flexible space for different activities.
The residential building is domestic level planning where the host families and students share common areas to initiate interaction between them. The frontage is offset to avoid west sun.
The central new served spaces are interactive corridor street of the home stay residence. All the windows and balconies in this residential block are oriented to north and south orientation.
The transformative potential of spatial planning in enhancing social interactions through the innovative use of served Spaces. That creates environments that cater to the diverse needs of the international students.
