At the tip of White Bay where the industrious legacy of concrete vessels and formidable power infrastructures intersect lies Saltspire. Saltspire transcends the conventional role of an observation point; it evolves into an adaptive theatre—a machine that reimagines the interaction between space, audience, and spectacle. The design ethos is characterized by its circular form, an emblem of the perpetual cycles of machinery and the capricious nature of the site all while harmonizing with the rhythmic undulations of the harbour. Its robust concrete facade pays homage to the bay’s enduring structures, evoking the strength and historical significance of the concrete ships that once sailed these waters.
The site plan depicts White Bay's concrete theatre, mirroring ship decks and industrial wrecks. A long deck motif guides audience entry, while a conceptual collage explores mechanization of the site.
The Level 1 floor plan of SaltSpire showcases essential public services, including a ticket booth, merchandise store, and restrooms. The entrance is accentuated by a spacious deck leading to the tower.
The Saltspire's Level 2 incorporates a versatile rotating stage and seating arrangement tailored for diverse performances, while Level 3 encompasses a bar, both offering a glassed viewing deck of Sydney Harbour.
The section and elevation of Saltpire showcase a mesh façade that elegantly echoes the sails of the harbor's vessels, enhancing the building's aesthetic while paying homage to its maritime context.
