A School of ‘Otherness’

‘Desert Islands’: A School of Architecture on Cockatoo Island / Wareamah

Deleuze’s idea of a ‘desert island’ is both foreshadowing a style and a pedagogy in the culture of architecture. For one, the excitement to be extracted from the roughness and wildness is an architectural expression that has constantly been used in contemporary designs. On the other, the exploration of possibility in architecture culture is strongly rooted in the research-based design in contemporary architecture schools. Architecture is a reflection of research. This innovation, not necessarily scientific, promotes the best of us to achieve a balanced mastery of personal style and professional skills.
