Before the Play

In late 2023, Connor Stalions — a former U.S. Naval Academy student and Michigan Wolverines coach — became known for decoding NCAA sideline signals, applying military training to gain a tactical edge. In architecture, signalling regulates discernibility, determining what is visible or obscured. Imagining an occupied Australia, drawn from John Marsden’s Tomorrow, When the War Began, Glebe Markets becomes a resistance base where signalling operates as a mask. This investigation examines how signals shape perception, using media as a tool for coordination and protest. Architecture becomes a medium of bluff, deception, and anticipation, constructing resistance through intent as much as form.
