Layers of Softness

Layers of Softness is a cultural learning centre on Gadigal Country shaped by walking, landscape, and the gentle filtering of light through foliage. Two linear buildings frame a central alley, connected by slow ramps that guide movement through layered spaces. In plan, linear partitions cut through the building to create parallel, overlapping zones that reinforce its spatial logic. Planted niches are embedded throughout, bringing filtered light and softness into circulation areas. A raised tree level introduces a soft canopy environment where the boundaries between inside and outside dissolve, producing a third-space atmosphere. Together, these spaces create an open, inclusive environment that welcomes diverse communities and honours First Peoples.
