Common Ground

Common Ground focuses on creating “third spaces” to facilitate connection and learning. To accomplish this idea, the building mass was disconnected to create a series of pavilion-like buildings with the area between these masses acting as outdoor/indoor public space. The three building masses are connected by a polycarbonate greenhouse-like shell that can be opened and closed based on weather conditions and different program uses. This shell is made from light weight polycarbonate with a steel framing system. The polycarbonate material allows for a translucent facade that blurs the threshold between building and landscape. A major theme of this project is connection with the history of the land underneath University of Sydney’s campus. In the collage you can see the main campus roads are isolated with artwork underneath. One of those pieces was created by artist Kate Constantine (Konstantina) and is made with natural pigments foraged from Gadigal Country and made on acrylic. The piece depicts oyster shells that are found locally and symbolize a connection with water and country. To connect the building to country, parts of the ground floor are lifted allowing for spaces to form underneath which have a gravel flooring made of recycled oysters shells.
