The Tide Returns

Lacing the edge of the Sydney coastline, shell middens stand as quiet monuments to millennia of Gadigal life. These rhythms of sea and tide are accumulated through the shells and sand of the local environment. Here, a reciprocal relationship between Country and the human hand was born. Designing in their spirit means allowing the earth to rise to meet the building, from the land’s own strata instead of carving into it. In this way, the building becomes an act of continuity.. The façade material — concrete and stone infused with crushed oyster shell — carries this philosophy forward.
